These are from a family session we did for my parents anniversary last Friday.

First Comes Love...

Meet Jeremy & Rachael, they were in the same class of the same high school, but didn't even meet until after they graduated (they are from the Madison Wisconsin area & it was a very large class).

It's a good thing they did eventually meet though because they are perfect for each other. So kind & sweet to one another. I had so much fun getting to know them.

I hope you like your photographs as much as I do!

It was chilly so we had a hot chocolate picnic...

I always look for this with the couples I photograph, do they make each other laugh? These two certainly do.

We had a great sunset...

I love these next two, you both had me laughing as well :)

After the pretty sunset it started to sprinkle on us, but that didn't stop the photographs, it just gave us a great reason to use a fun umbrella.

If you ask me the only down side of fall is that it means winter is right around the corner.

I am not a fan of winter.

I am so in love with how your senior photographs turned out!!! No kidding - you rocked the camera. Typically I zoom through to find a few of my favorites to post, but zooming was not an option with your images. Every other image was my favorite. Ken & I just got back from our first getaway of the summer! We had a lovely time with the Erickson family. The girls were so entertaining. The next few posts will most likely be centered around them :)

How sweet are these? I just loved how every time she stirred her "tea" she licked the spoon! It makes me smile. I think she must have learned that one from mom.

"Do I like that?"

if the answer is yes, then I ask myself,

"WHY?"

It has been through this process that I have come to realize that I love, Love, LOVE photographs with an old photo flare. What about you, do you love old photos too?

I Heart Faces ~ Pets

I usually don't do much personal posting on the blog. However when I saw that this weeks challenge on iheartfaces was pets, my mind went right to the pics I just took of Tess.

I am certainly not a pet photographer so when I get a photograph where she is looking at me I tend to think it is great. Anyway here is a photo for this weeks challenge of our 3 1/2 year old lab beagle mix.

One Photo ~ Three Ways

I am a firm believer that if you are a professional photographer then your photographs should reflect that. So today I wanted to show how I go from a raw image straight out of my camera to my finished product. I can certainly see a differance in these images, but the goal is to still make them look natural not fake.

This image was taken on a ridiculusly hot day, and it was partly cloudy.

This is straight out of the camera, not to bad - maybe a little bright but not blown out.

and this is the same image just edited,

so in photoshop I adjusted my levels (made my blacks blacker & whites whiter)

then took my paintbrush @ 23% opacity & took some of the shine off their faces

took my dodge tool & lightly did their eyes

took my burn tool & burned the edges of the brick to draw the eye into the center

put a softening filter @ 20% then erased eye & mouth areas

& wah-lah the finished product:

For black & white images I desaturate (the image always needs to be tweaked after it is desaturated)

then I go into levels & tweak again

then I tweak in curves (very similar to levels but helps to pop the image a little more)

personally I don't mind my black & white images blown out a little

then I burn the edges a little more to give it more contrast

it looks like this:

This is a photograph I took in 2006. It was the first wedding I ever booked. The bride, Jessie, has the most amazing eyes. So I dug through my archives & found this image. I think it is perfect for this weeks challenge.

I have been so excited to post these images. We took these at the end of the shoot & I think we were all pretty tired out from the heat. So we just plopped down in the grass & I told them to make faces at me :)

Ha ha ha ~ I thought it was pretty funny what they came up with!

Thursday Teaser

I did some engagement photographs of my brother in law & his fiance yesterday. It was fun, although it was ridiculously hot out. I live in Iowa - it shouldn't get that hot even if it is July. That is my opinion at least.

Despite the temperature we got some beautiful images. This one was taken a little after 7:30 p.m. How pretty is that light?

When I found out that this weeks challenge was water, I had to use this image. This is one of the many senior photographs that I took of my little sister. There was no way she wasn't going to sit right in the middle of this waterfall (even though the water was frigid).

I have recently become aware that I only have photographs of people up on my walls. Don't get me wrong, I love photographing people - that's why I am a photographer. So I challenged myself to come up with something fun & fresh. Here is one of the options I came up with. It is still a photograph but a fun twist on tulips in a vase, so if you come over for a session you just might see this hanging on my wall!

This from a wedding I did back in April, and this alley was really gross.

I mean dirty, darkish, trash on the ground gross.

It also had graffiti - but I don't classify that as gross.

What to wear for a mommy-to-be session...

I don't know if you have noticed this but it seems like everyone is having babies right now. Things like that usually come in spurts. I happen to love maternity photographs. It is a fun way to celebrate this little miracle. I think this is probably one of the hardest sessions to figure out what to wear so here are some ideas that would photograph well.

This next one was taken in Charles City IA, it was my first time running around town to a few places I scouted out before her session. I will be photographing there again. :)

I couldn't pass up a chain link fence with some ivy! Plus it was super close to the sweet storage buildings in my previous post.

Well, all the images from my sisters wedding are officially color corrected & retouched.

That is a good start, however now comes the big part: Designing their album!

I have been working on it & these are the pages that I have designed so far.

My typical turn around time for weddings is three months, so as of right now we are still on track.

I had to post some from Josh's outdoor session. You can't go wrong with lighting like this. It was the perfect time of day to do this shoot. The only problem was that we ran out of light before we ran out of ideas. Oh well... we used the beautiful colors to our advantage.

It was a truly lovely day. From the flowers to the sunshine to the pretty ribbon hanging from the entrance of the barn. I think you could say it was a success. But before I post all of the beautiful & elegant images from my sisters wedding I wanted to post the silly & goofy ones of the guests that attended.

The photobooth is something new & fun I am going to be offering to my wedding clients. This is the first time I attempted it so please please please leave me a comment with some feedback. I want to know if this is something that you like or dislike, if I should have any other silly props, or if I should do something differently.

Wow! So I have a crazy lot of photobooth pic's from my sisters wedding. For some reason though these handsome gentlemen get the honor of being the first picture I post. Maybe it's because they look so cute with their staches, maybe because of Ethan's (the tallest) wonderful angry face, maybe because of the random peacock feathers, maybe because Cableb looks like a mobster.

Well for whatever the reason, I love this photo & I hope you do to!

I had the opportunity to photograph something a little different this week - Jewelry. I really enjoyed it because it gave me a chance to mix things up from my routine.

The best part about it was that I got to help a friend who is starting her own business.

Mariela is very talented, artistic, & creative. So it is no surprise that her jewelry shows off her strengths so well. I know other ladies are going to love her pieces just as much as I do.

This is an example of the Coffee Table Books that I offer.

They are an excellent option for any occasion.

The books pictured are the 8.5x11 size & the 5x7 size.

The 8.5x11 is the standard size for most sessions.

The 5x7 size is most often used as a sign in album for weddings.

The new cover option is this great floral pattern.

It comes in Champagne & Black (pictured)

as well as Platinum, Bronze, & White.

The books are very well made, with thick pages.

Every layout is different since I design every album one photograph at a time.

This fabric option is almost iridescent.

The 5x7 Albums are a great way to display your favorite photographs from your engagement session.

I like this one, it just seems really relaxed & soft.
